LYMAN ALLYN ART MUSEUM PRESENTS FALL/WINTER 2015 PROGRAMMING

New London – The Lyman Allyn Art Museum will present a variety of public programming through December 2015. The range of programs includes lectures, performances, gallery talks, family days, and hands-on holiday workshops.

Doug Varone and Dancers

Varone’s articulate and insightful way of dissecting his choreography for audiences helps to demystify the art form for many viewers, and provides an overture for experiencing his work. During the “Stripped” program Varone provides an intimate look at his creative process. The Company, dressed in only rehearsal clothes presents a detailed look into the intricacies of how dances are created and performed.

Behind the Scenes at the Yale Conservation Lab

The Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (IPCH) is an important new initiative based at Yale which is already having global impact. Headquartered in Yale’s West Campus in West Haven, it is dedicated to advancing the science and practice of conservation of our cultural heritage in a sustainable manner. At the crossroads between science and art, the Institute is home to state-of-the-art research, conservation and digitization laboratories. Led by Inaugural Director Stefan Simon, it engages in interdisciplinary research and teaching both in fully modern laboratories and in the field. In addition to projects wherever they are needed, the scientists and conservators also work closely with Yale’s own collections, libraries and academic training programs. The Executive Session

Presenting a unique blend of mainly Irish traditional music with American fold roots music, The Executive Session is the name of the ensemble created by flutist Michael “Skip” McKinley. The arrangements are flavored by the musicians Skip has gathered for this musical journey: pianist Glenn Hardy and percussionist Mance Grady.

Holly Days
As part of Lyman Allyn’s season of Wonderment, join us on the first three Saturdays in December for special programming, including a performance by the Pumpernickel Puppets, a Holiday Greenery Workshop, and a Gingerbread House Workshop. Then drop in to our Holiday Café. Enjoy a light lunch or indulge your sweet tooth with our holiday á la carte menu.

11:30AM: Join us for a Holiday Greenery Workshop. Options include making your own Kissing Ball or Tabletop decoration. Reservations required: 860.443.2545 x129; $15 members / $20 non-members. Limited space is available.

12:00 – 2:00PM: Holiday Café in the Hendel Library

December 19
11:30AM: Try your hand at a Gingerbread house workshop in the auditorium. Reservations required: 860.443.2545 x129; $20 members / $25 non-members, fee is based per gingerbread kit. Limited space is available.

Snowflake Family Teas
Celebrate the season of Wonderment at one of the Museum’s Snowflake family tea parties, held every Sunday in December! Enjoy splendid tea and desserts and then immerse yourself in hands-on fun with a scavenger hunt through the galleries and a sparkling snow globe art project or enchanted dance workshop. Fun for the whole family!

About the Lyman Allyn Art Museum
The Lyman Allyn Art Museum welcomes visitors from New London, Southeastern Connecticut and all over the world. Established in 1926 by a gift from Harriet Allyn in memory of her seafaring father, the Museum opened the doors of its beautiful neo-classical building surrounded by 11 acres of green space in 1932. Today it presents a number of changing exhibitions each year and houses a fascinating collection of over 15,000 objects from ancient times to the present; artworks from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, with particularly strong collections of American paintings, decorative arts and Victorian toys and doll houses.

The museum is located at 625 Williams Street, New London, Connecticut, exit 83 off I-95. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, Sundays 1:00 – 5:00 pm; closed Mondays and major holidays.
