Summer Art Immersion: Art Camps for Children & Teens
The museum’s hands-on art camps, designed for aspiring artists ages 5-15, provide a wonderful opportunity for children and teens to learn new artistic techniques, explore the museum’s collections and make new friends. In addition to completing special themed projects, participants will also paint outside in the museum’s garden, design their own portfolio and tour special exhibitions focusing on portraiture and seascape painting. All camps meet Tuesday-Friday from 9:30am-12:30pm. Cost is $120 members/$130 non-members.
Session #1: June 28-July 1: Animals and Art of the Rain Forest (ages 5-7) After daily animal eye-spy tours of the galleries, participants will create art inspired by the creatures and culture of the rain forest. Special projects will include: tree-frog sculpting, jaguar collages, solar printing, rain stick construction and mask making.
Session #2: July 12-July 15: Painting, Printing & Pastels (ages 8-11) Participants will learn experimental painting as they work with brushes, rollers, pipettes and even toothbrushes to create unique murals and masterpieces. Pastel painting and a variety of printmaking techniques—foam printing, bubble printing, solar printing—will also be featured.
Session #3: July 19-22: Knights & Princesses of the Round Table (ages 5-7) After daily eye-spy tours of the galleries, participants will be transformed into kids in King Arthur’s court as they build 3-D castles, design shields and crowns, paint stained glass windows and create dragon collages.
Session #4: August 2-5: Advanced Art Salon (ages 12-15) Participants will learn about painting composition as they work directly from nature and explore positive/negative space as they design and build their own sculptures. Time will also be allotted for portfolio development and demonstrations by two visiting artists.
Session #5: August 9-12: Art of the Underwater World (ages 8-11) After daily sea-themed eye-spy tours, participants will explore creatures of the deep as they learn watercolor painting techniques, create 3-D tropical fish, build shadow boxes and design mosaics.
