Celebrating Lyman Allyn’s 90th Anniversary

Look for our 90th anniversary logo throughout the year as we celebrate the Lyman Allyn’s long and rich history in our community and region.
We thank our founder, Harriet Upson Allyn, for her commitment to the power of art as we continue to make her dreams for an art museum and park a reality in New London.

Portrait of Harriet Upson Allyn as a child, about 1850, Unknown artist, oil on wood panel. Lyman Allyn Estate 1931.24.

Before the First World War, Harriet signed the legal document which would create the “Lyman Allyn Park and Museum” in memory of her father, the successful whaling captain and New London businessman. The Roaring Twenties were still, well, roaring, when plans to realize Harriet’s vision began in earnest in 1927. Five years later, with great fanfare, the newly built Lyman Allyn Museum opened its doors for the first time on March 2, 1932, the day that would have been Harriet’s 92nd birthday.

As we celebrate the Museum’s 90th anniversary year, everyone here at the Museum continues to be inspired by Harriet’s gift and her foresight. We recently kicked off a major initiative to fully achieve her vision by transforming our twelve acres of green space into a splendid and lively urban park. We envision areas for environmental learning, performance events, compelling outdoor sculpture, pollinator meadows and contemplative natural spaces. Our chosen landscape architect, Kent + Frost, is developing a master plan which will guide the impressive work to be done.

We have many exciting projects lined up throughout the year. Check back often for our list of exhibitions and events.
