A sampling of several Asian musical traditions – Indian, Middle Eastern, East Asian, and Southeast Asian – will be enabled by mining the riches of YouTube in active class listening and discussion sessions. Attention will focus on musical attributes of these traditions and the wide variety of instruments which give rise to the many flavors of musical expression in Asia. Exploration of the vocally inspired polyphonic gong-chime orchestra tradition of Southeastern Asia will contextualize the special exhibition opening of Encountering Resonance: Aaron Taylor Kuffner’s Gamelatron on February 27.

Schedule of Sessions

  • February 25: Music of South and North India
  • March 4: Music of the Middle East
  • March 11: Music of China and Japan
  • March 18: Music of Thailand and Philippines
  • March 25: Music of Java and Bali

Sam Quigley has been the Director of the Lyman Allyn since May 2014. He has been privileged to work in several major cultural institutions, namely the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, SFMOMA, Harvard University Art Museums, and most recently, the Art Institute of Chicago. A life-long aspiring musician, he gave up French horn, which he studied at the Eastman School of Music, to pursue his curiosity about non-western music as an undergraduate at Wesleyan University, which is where he also earned his M.A. in Musicology. A beginner-level student of the Japanese koto and an avid advocate of North and South Indian music, he is widely regarded as an expert in Javanese gamelan music.
