Homeschool Art Workshops: Fall 2013

The museum’s hands-on workshops, designed specifically for aspiring homeschool artists ages 5-13, provide a wonderful opportunity for children and teens to learn new artistic techniques, explore the museum’s collections and make new friends. Students will take guided tours and complete art projects related to these two exciting exhibitions: Kitty Whales: Lionfish and Greasy Luck: The Whaling World of the Charles W. Morgan.

Class Schedule: (4 fall classes)

  • September 17: Tour of the Lionfish exhibit, followed by a sea creature sculpting project
  • October 15: Tour of the Charles W. Morgan exhibit and seascape painting workshop
  • November 19: Tour of the Museum’s whaling murals, followed by a boat-building project
  • December 17: Whaling world scavenger hunt and holiday card-printing workshop

Classes meet on the third Tuesday of each month and run for 90 minutes. The morning session runs from 10:30-12:00 and is designed for students ages 5-9, while the afternoon session runs from 1:30-3:00 and is geared for students ages 10-13.

Location: Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT

Tuition: Tuition for the fall session (includes 4 classes) is $40 for museum members and $50 for non-members

Registration: Full payment is required at time of registration. Each class is limited to 12 students; please call the Education Department at 860-443-2545 x110 or email clarke@lymanallyn.org to register.

The Yellow Bus Fund

Donate Now

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum believes that funding should not be a factor when it comes to the cultural enrichment of the region’s school children. Through the Yellow Bus Fund, which is replenished each year by generous donors, we are pleased to cover the cost of field trips to the Museum for schools that find the cost of planning a visit prohibitive.

With the support of the Yellow Bus Fund, the Lyman Allyn is able to provide a full subsidy for New London public schools. The subsidy includes 100% of the costs of transportation, tour, materials for a “hands-on” curriculum-based project, and the art educators. We also cover 50% of the bus costs for New London County schools, and 25% transportation expenses for all other schools in the state. Finally, the Yellow Bus Fund also covers some of the costs associated with our Summer Art Immersion Camps and provides scholarships each year for several deserving New London public school students who could otherwise not attend.

Over the years, the Lyman Allyn has raised a great deal of support for the Yellow Bus Fund at our annual galas. In addition, we are now inviting support for this vitally important program throughout the year. As you consider helping, please know that every gift counts, and that your contribution is greatly appreciated. To give you an idea of the importance of your support, $175 is the average cost of field trip transportation and $250 is the cost of a “hands on” art component for one classroom. We would like to raise significant new support so we can increase the program’s benefits on an annual basis to about $50,000. Please give generously. Your support really matters.
