Book Lecture with Richard Friswell

Richard Friswell highlights his exciting work of historical fiction, Merchants of Deceit: Opium, American Fortune and the China Trade, based on the life and times of Sam Russell, a Connecticut  businessman who made his fortune selling opium. It follows imagined adventures and challenges as he negotiates the treacherous world of drug dealing, international intrigue, deal-making, new-found love and loss, violence and human cruelty beyond anything he had ever known. This is the human story of his struggle to make sense of an illicit world of drugs, graft, corruption and death, while remaining true to his awaiting family, community and values, half-a-world away.

Location: Lyman Allyn Lehman Auditorium

Richard Friswell is a Visiting Scholar at Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT, where he directs the Institute for Lifelong Leaning, their adult education program. This is his third book dealing with topics of cultural history through the imagined eye of a cultural historian and storyteller. He speaks and lectures widely on topics related to the ‘Modern Era,’ a time during the 18th and 19th century when Western civilization was experiencing rapid change in the face of the Industrial Revolution and widespread political upheaval. He lives and writes in Branford, CT.

Merchants of Deceit: Opium, American Fortune & the China Trade can be ordered directly through the author and will be appearing on Amazon and bookstores regionally in November (300 pages, 35 color illustrations, retail: $27.95).
