Science Saturdays

Time: 11 AM – 1 PM in the art studio
Cost: Free with Museum admission

  •  July 16: Build a Bridge
    • Be inspired by the different bridges that are found across the Connecticut shoreline. Learn the differences between drawbridges, turnstile bridges, and suspension bridges before constructing your own weight-bearing bridge.
  •  August 20: Community LeWitt
    • Contribute to a community artwork inspired by Sol Le Witt. Use your geometry skills to calculate the area painted by each of our main Color Wheel colors. Then, use measuring tools to design your own geometric work of art.
  • September 17: In Season Botanicals
    • Learn about the scientific importance of growing seasons for different plants and flowers. Why do some plants grow in winter when most thrive in the spring and summer? How do different climates, soil makeups, and other factors affect where plants grow. Inspired by Catherine Christiano, make a work of art that connects a specific date and place to a plant.
  • October 15: Gorgeous Gourds
    • What is the difference between a squash, gourd, and pumpkin? Learn about the many varieties of this favorite fall vegetation, their scientific names, and prevalent uses in art across cultures. Then, paint a still life representing different varieties of gourds.
  • November 19: Colors
    • What makes colors different? Learn about perception, the color spectrum, and the chemical makeup of inks while conducting your own chromatography experiment. See how water and time affect different inks, then turn your experiment into a work of art!
  • December 17: Rock On
      • What makes a gem precious? Learn about what the characteristics of gemstones and why they are valued more than regular rocks. Create your own geode themed work of art.

Science Saturdays are made possible by Pfizer Inc. and Groton Laboratories.
