Eva’s Promise: Film Screening & Talk Back with Director STEVE McCARTHY & Co-Producer SUSAN KERNER (CC alumna)

While the world knows Anne Frank’s story, “Eva’s Promise” introduces the story of Heinz Geiringer, his paintings and poetry created in hiding during World War II, and the efforts of his sister Eva Geiringer Schloss (posthumous stepsister of Anne Frank) to find her brother Heinz’s artwork, and share his legacy with the world.

This program is co-presented by Connecticut College, The Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut, and Lyman Allyn Art Museum in conjunction with their pop-up exhibition Art in the Holocaust from the Yad Vashem Collection. We recommend viewing the artworks at Lyman Allyn prior to the screening. 

About the Speakers

Steve McCarthy is an Emmy Award-winning network TV news producer and documentary filmmaker. A former staff producer for “60 Minutes”, “Dateline” and CNN, he formed McCarthy Productions, Inc in 2001 and produced projects for “60 Minutes,” “Dateline,” “Charlie Rose,” MSNBC, PBS, BBC America, Reuters, and others. In 2006 he directed an independent documentary film “Finding Paddy,” a documentary about 9/11 which aired in more than 20 countries. In 2016 he co-produced the documentary “The One That Got Away” which aired on PBS. In 2019 he co-directed and co-produced an HBO documentary about journalism through the life stories of Pete Hamill and Jimmy Breslin called “Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists”. (Winner 2019 National Emmy) In 2019 he also co-produced the documentary feature “Life with Layla” about a New Jersey family caught in the grips of the opioid epidemic. In 2022, he directed and co-produced “Eva’s Promise”, about a Holocaust survivor’s promise to her brother to share his art should he not survive the concentration camps. McCarthy teaches documentary film and journalism at Montclair State University.

Susan Kerner is a Professor Emerita of Theatre at Montclair State University. She has directed in New York, London and Cambridge (England), Shanghai, and at theatres and universities throughout the United States including Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Meadow Brook Theatre (MI), George Street Playhouse, Luna Stage, NYU, Rutgers, University of Kansas, CCNY, FDU, and The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She is currently working with A STAGE OF THEIR OWN, a play development project for NJ women playwrights. Her recent productions at Montclair State University include The Wolves, An Ideal Husband, Mad Forest, Punk Rock, Pride and Prejudice, Clybourne Park, The Big Meal, Equus, Arcadia, and The Grapes of Wrath. Ms. Kerner has led international programs for MSU in China, Korea, Austria, Italy, Greece, and England. She holds graduate degrees from Columbia and BU, was a Fulbright Scholar in India, and is a member of SDC.

Their conversation will be moderated by Jessica Goldberg.

Rabbi Jessica Goldberg is a graduate of the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College (MA in Jewish Education, MA in Jewish Studies, certificate in Interreligious Leadership, and rabbinic ordination) and Brandeis University (BA in Psychology and Religious Studies). Rabbi Goldberg has experience in multifaith chaplaincy and conflict education and is passionate about Jewish text and pluralistic community building.
