Eva’s Promise: Film Screening & Talk Back with Director STEVE McCARTHY & Co-Producer SUSAN KERNER (CC alumna)

While the world knows Anne Frank’s story, “Eva’s Promise” introduces the story of Heinz Geiringer, his paintings and poetry created in hiding during World War II, and the efforts of his sister Eva Geiringer Schloss (posthumous stepsister of Anne Frank) to find her brother Heinz’s artwork, and share his legacy with the world.

This program is co-presented by Connecticut College, The Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut, and Lyman Allyn Art Museum in conjunction with their pop-up exhibition Art in the Holocaust from the Yad Vashem Collection. We recommend viewing the artworks at Lyman Allyn prior to the screening. 

About the Speakers

Steve McCarthy (Director/Co-Producer) is an Emmy Award-winning network TV news producer and documentary filmmaker. He has been on staff for “60 Minutes”, “Dateline”, and CNN. In 2001 he formed McCarthy Productions, Inc. and produced projects for “60 Minutes,” “Dateline,” “Charlie Rose,” MSNBC, PBS, BBC America, Reuters and others. McCarthy’s documentaries include: Finding Paddy (2006), The One That Got Away (2016), for HBO Breslin & Hamill: Deadline Artists (Winner, 2019 National Emmy), and Life with Layla.” McCarthy is a Professor in the School of Communication and Media at Montclair State University where he teaches documentary film and journalism and leads teams of student journalists and filmmakers throughout the US and abroad to report on contemporary social and environmental issues.

Susan Kerner (Co-Producer) has directed stage productions in New York, London and Cambridge (UK), Shanghai, and at theatres and universities throughout the United States. As Resident Director at George Street Playhouse, she produced the world premiere of And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank and directed the award-winning play in the UK (London and Cambridge), The Kennedy Center, NJPAC, The Museum of Jewish Heritage and several US regional theatres. Ms. Kerner is Professor Emerita at Montclair State University where she directed over twenty-five stage productions and led international programs in China, Korea, Austria, Italy, Greece, and England. A proud alumna of Connecticut College, Ms. Kerner was a Fulbright Scholar in India, holds graduate degrees from Columbia University and Boston University and is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers.

Their conversation will be moderated by Jessica Goldberg.

Rabbi Jessica Goldberg is a graduate of the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College (MA in Jewish Education, MA in Jewish Studies, certificate in Interreligious Leadership, and rabbinic ordination) and Brandeis University (BA in Psychology and Religious Studies). Rabbi Goldberg has experience in multifaith chaplaincy and conflict education and is passionate about Jewish text and pluralistic community building.
