Across Hope: The Mitchell Collection of African American Art presents works by celebrated contemporary African American artists created over the last four decades.

Drawn from the collection of Bill and Paula Alice Mitchell, the exhibition features more than 30 figurative and abstract paintings, collage, prints and sculpture.

Over the past twenty years, the Mitchells have assembled an outstanding collection of works by prominent African American artists, among them Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Samella Lewis, David C. Driskell, Nelson Stevens, Willie Cole, and Charly Palmer, whose 2009 mixed media collage Across Hope lends the show its title.

Together they carry stories both individual and collective, resonant with generational history and incisive reflections on our times. Themes of resilience, resistance and transcendence run through the works, creating a powerful and eye-opening experience for viewers.
