Lydia Viscardi – Time Takes Time presents a body of mixed-media work that considers the passage of time and the cycles of the seasons within the changing natural world.
Living where development gradually encroaches on native habitat and human activity and wilderness intersect, I witness moments of fragile balance and quiet tension prompting reflection on continuity, loss and change. While grounded in lived observation, my work is also informed by an awareness of broader environmental shifts unfolding globally. Counter to this, the comforting rhythm of spring, summer, autumn, and winter provides a measure through which time can be seen and felt.
Time Takes Time combines painting, collage, drawing, and assemblage, using printed matter, vintage hand-embellished textiles, fabric, and found objects. These materials form the supports and components of my two-dimensional work and wall-based sculpture. Colorful imagery, layered compositions and contradictory elements reveal a subtle humor and subversive undercurrent, giving the work an enigmatic yet playful tone.
About the Artist
Lydia Viscardi is a mixed media artist working in painting, drawing, collage, and assemblage sculpture. She was the 2024 Artist-in-Residence at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House (a social services center and cultural institution) in New York City and a recipient of the 2023 Connecticut Office of the Arts Artist Fellowship. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Rick Wester Fine Art in New York City, Real Art Ways in Hartford, Connecticut, and Five Points Gallery in Torrington, Connecticut, and in group exhibitions including The Drawing Center in New York City; Museum of Contemporary Art in New York; The Hampden Gallery at UMass Amherst; The Camp Gallery in Miami, Florida; and The Clara M. Eagle Gallery at Murray State University in Kentucky.
Viscardi’s work is held in the collections of the Housatonic Museum of Art, Eastern Connecticut State University, Lenox Hill Neighborhood House in New York City, and The Copelouzos Art Museum in Athens, Greece, as well as private collections in the United States and United Kingdom. Viscardi holds a BFA from C.W. Post College of Long Island University and an MFA in Visual Art from William Paterson University of New Jersey. She maintains a studio in Connecticut.
