Faith and Fortune: Henry and Amelia Champlin and America’s Maritime Ascendancy

Co-authored by Geoffrey Paul and Steven Ujifusa, Faith and Fortune tells the story of Captain Henry and Amelia Champlin of Essex, Connecticut, whose lives unfolded during a transformative century in American history, from 1780 to 1880. Through the Champlin family’s experiences, the book explores the rise of transatlantic commerce, the New York-to-London packet ship trade, and pivotal events including the War of 1812, the opening of the Erie Canal, and the rise of steamships. At its heart is also the personal story of Henry and Amelia, whose lives were shaped by ambition, devotion, separation, and resilience.
